Alfreda’s Cinema Presents: BUSH MAMA
Monday, August 14 @ 9:00 pm
“Fiery, furious, overflowing with rhetoric.” – The New York Times
“Gerima’s great achievement is to compose a cinematic style that’s simultaneously observational and subjective, dramatic and internalized…The very existence of Bush Mama, along with its rarity, is a keen reminder that the history of cinema is still awaiting discovery—and that this history is also the history of its own exclusions, its foreclosed paths, its lost prospects, its secret influences, the shifting course of its future.” – The New Yorker
Bush Mama is the story of Dorothy and her husband T.C. He is a discharged Vietnam veteran who thought he would return home to a “hero’s welcome.” Instead he is falsely arrested and imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Her life revolves around the welfare office and a community facing poverty and unemployment. As a result of the film’s events, both the main characters become radicalized.
Dir. Haile Gerima. 1979. 97 min.
