Alfreda’s Cinema Presents LOSING GROUND (with Nina Collins in person!)
May 22 @ 6:30 pm
With Nina Collins in person!
“A nearly lost masterwork… plays like the record of a life revealed in real time.” —Richard Brody, The New Yorker
“That Losing Ground still feels fresh, over 3 decades later, is not only a testament to its timelessness, but also is sadly indicative of how scarce complex depictions of the inner lives of women—specifically black women—are, in contemporary American cinema.” —Tambay A. Obenson, Shadow and Act
Losing Ground, one of the first fiction films directed by an African-American woman, tells the story of a professor of philosophy and her painter husband, who begin to question their relationship as they each aim to advance their professional careers. Their country retreat is threatened by her research and involvement in a student film and his involvement with a young model.
All but lost for more than 30 years, Losing Ground‘s original negative was recently rescued by Nina Collins, daughter of director Kathleen Collins (who passed away in 1988 at the age of 46), at last making this overlooked masterwork available.
Dir. Kathleen Collins. 1982. 86 min.
