May 18 @ 9:30 pm
“Cool young girls will love this–as will grown-ups wise enough to absorb the truth of the wise women’s movement slogan ‘The personal is political.’” Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
“It might seem that her story is too large for one 98-minute film, but “Persepolis” tells it carefullt, lovingly, and with great style.” Roger Ebert
*scream sings ‘Eye of the Tiger’* Shayana Filmore, Independent Women curator & host
Based on Satrapi’s graphic novel about her life in pre and post-revolutionary Iran, and then in Europe. Nominated for an Academy Award, the film traces Satrapi’s growth from childhood to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the disastrous Iran/Iraq war.
Dir. Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Parronnaud. 2007. 96 min.
