MUBI Presents THE BIRDCAGE
May 25 @ 6:30 pm
Videology is partnering with the streaming service MUBI, an expertly curated selection of classic, cult, independent and international films from around the globe. Each month, we’ll screen a film based around a theme or director that is currently being featured on the website. One attendee will win a free year-long MUBI subscription!
MUBI will be showing a double feature tribute to Mike Nichols this month. Carnal Knowledge (1971) will be playing May 5 – June 5, and The Graduate (1967), celebrating its 50th anniversary, will be showing May 6 – June 6.
“The beauty of The Birdcage is that its jokes and its message are one and the same. These characters couldn’t change themselves if they tried. And only a fool would want them to.” – Entertainment Weekly
“The film is so boisterously entertaining that it’s easy for the unsuspecting viewer not to realize that there’s a message here.” – James Berardinelli
Armand Goldman owns a popular drag nightclub in South Miami Beach. His long-time lover, Albert, stars there as Starina. “Their” son Val (actually Armand’s by his one heterosexual fling, twenty years before) comes home to announce his engagement to Barbara Keeley, daughter of Kevin Keeley, US Senator, and co-founder of the Committee for Moral Order. The Senator and family descend upon South Beach to meet Val, his father and “mother.” What ensues is comic chaos in this Elaine May-penned script hailed by GLAAD for “going beyond the stereotypes to see the character’s depth and humanity” and “celebrating differences and pointing out the outrageousness of hiding those differences.”
Dir. Mike Nichols. 1996. 118 min.
