MUBI Presents: TIME BANDITS
February 23 @ 6:30 pm
Videology is partnering with the streaming service MUBI, an expertly curated selection of classic, cult, independent and international films from around the globe. Each month, we’ll screen a film based around a theme or director that is currently being featured on the website. One attendee will win a free year-long MUBI subscription!
In conjunction with MUBI’s retrospective on the Polish Surrealist Walerian Borowczyk, we will be screening Time Bandits, directed by Terry Gilliam, who has professed that Borowczyk is a major influence. The retrospective will start on MUBI February 12th and continue through April.
“Parents may not approve of this dark, violent 1981 children’s film, which is what makes it such a good one…the film is resolutely, passionately anti-adult, yet much of the humor has an adult sophistication and edge to it; this is one kids’ movie that doesn’t condescend.” – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
“Perhaps the greatest characteristic attributable to Time Bandits is its sense of invention. The movie does so many things, all of them well.” – ReelViews
Young history buff Kevin (Craig Warnock) can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson), they’ve purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon (Ian Holm), Robin Hood (John Cleese) and King Agamemnon (Sean Connery) before the Supreme Being catches up with them.
Dir. Terry Gilliam. 1981. 116 min.
