Staff Picks: DAYS OF HEAVEN
September 18 @ 9:30 pm
We’re going back to our roots as a video rental store for our new Staff Picks series. Staff Picks is a chance for the whole Videology team to flex their cinematic muscles and give The People what they really want.
Next up, Terrence Malick’s DAYS OF HEAVEN.
“What’s kept this film in critical discourse since its 1978 release? Maybe it’s the Oscar-winning, magic-hour-every-hour cinematography (Nestor Almendros). Maybe it’s the muted dialogue, often a mere suggestion of speech. Maybe it’s Linda Manz’s whimsical, off-the-cuff narration. This prohibition-era tale of incest, lust, jealousy, and rage in rural Texas is unruly and idiosyncratic, but remains gripping through its 94 minute runtime. In retrospect there’s plenty to adore: young Richard Gere is joined by Brooke Adams in one of her woefully few leading roles; together the pair plots to dupe a discombobulated gentry farmer (Sam Shephard, RIP) in the twilight years of his life. Days of Heaven is an impressionistic melodrama with an unmistakably American flavor. A major entry in 1970s Cinema.” – Parker Menzimer, bartender
Parker is a Williamsburg bartender and bookseller. In addition to serving watermelon margaritas at Videology he designs books & zines, organizes literary events, and plays drums in the rock trio Superintendent. His favorite movie is Sideways and he’s worried that disqualifies him from participating in Staff Picks. Catch him on twitter @peach_kefir or insta @peter_luger.
