Brunch Screening: SOLARIS
Sunday, September 24 @ 10:00 am
“The Wild Brunch” series highlights some of our favorite movies that go beyond what we deem generally acceptable runtimes. These are the epics you’ve always wanted to see but found too intimidating or offensive to your iPhone-induced attention span. We have the solution for your tour de force anxiety: friends, intermissions, and brunch. We’re going to get through this together, and believe us, you’ll be happy you did.
Your ticket to the Solaris brunch will include:
- Borscht from Veselka (includes meat)
- Astronaut Ice Cream
- 1 mimosa OR bloody mary OR hot toddy
“A visually hypnotic, deeply affecting story of conscience, love, and reconciliation… Solaris is an exploration beyond the vessel of humanity, a journey to extend the territorial bounds of man, only to find the vast frontier of his own subconscious. In a society driven to explore the farthest reaches of the universe in search of Truth, the Solaris ocean provides an introspective catalyst for probing the deepest regions of the human soul.” Senses of Cinema
“[Solaris] ranks with the best of Tarkovsky’s work, which is to say it ranks with the best of the movies produced at any time… The plot may resemble an episode of Star Trek, but the conversations especially are Star Trek as rewritten by Dostoevsky.” The Globe and Mail
A psychologist is sent to a space station orbiting a planet called Solaris to investigate the death of a doctor and the mental problems of cosmonauts on the station. He soon discovers that the water on the planet is a type of brain which brings out repressed memories and obsessions.
Dir. Andrei Tarkovsky. 1972. 167 min.
