Independent Women: THE PIANO

Thursday, February 15 @ 9:00 pm

Independent Women is a monthly screening series bringing you underrated, overlooked, “Why haven’t I seen this?!” films directed by women.

“To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Independent Women we’re watching one of the greatest films ever made ever. Ever.” – Shayana Filmore, Independent Women Curator & Host

“An enigmatic masterpiece from one of the finest living film-makers.” – The Guardian

After a long voyage from Scotland, pianist Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) and her young daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin), are left with all their belongings, including a piano, on a New Zealand beach. Ada, who has been mute since childhood, has been sold into marriage to a local man named Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill). Making little attempt to warm up to Alisdair, Ada soon becomes intrigued by his Maori-friendly acquaintance, George Baines (Harvey Keitel), leading to tense, life-altering conflicts.

Dir. Jane Campion. 1993. 121 min.

Stick around after the film! Redeem your ticket at the bar for $2 off any drink.
