Conscientious Projections Presents PROJECT X + THE OATH
At 33 Thomas Street in Downtown Manhattan stands a 550-foot tall brutalist slab of concrete. Utterly lacking in windows, the building, owned by AT&T, is unlike any in the area. In November 2016, an investigation by The Intercept revealed that the building is also home to an NSA surveillance site, code-name TITANPOINTE, used to monitor phone calls and internet data. The reveal, which further verified the collaboration between AT&T and the NSA, has led many to worry about violations of the 4th Amendment and illegal monitoring of citizens, while others have defended NSA practices as a necessary compromise for the sake of national security.
For our April Conscientious Projections event, we will screen Project X, Field of Vision’s short documentary about TITANPOINTE directed by investigative journalist and filmmaker Henrik Moltke and Laura Poitras, Field of Vision’s co-creator and the director of Citizenfour. In addition, we will also screen Laura Poitras’ 2010 film The Oath, about Salim Hamdan, who served as the driver for Osama Bin Laden, was detained at Guantanamo Bay for six years and convicted first at a military tribunal of terrorist-related charges and then in civilian court but won appeals against both convictions. The film juxtaposes Hamdan’s trial with the life of Abu Jandal, his brother-in-law in Yemen and a former bodyguard to bin Laden, examining the lives of both men to illuminate regional attitudes toward Al-Qaeda and U.S. foreign policy.
Taken together, the two films create a conversation about the expansion of the surveillance state, its relationship to an escalating concern with national security, and the United States’ repeated intervention since 9/11 beginning with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Joining us for that conversation will be Henrik Moltke as well as Project X’s producer, Yoni Golijov.
Shrink Along: ALICE with a live score!
Shrink and grow with Alice! Alice’s DRINK ME potion and EAT ME cookie are included with your ticket! In addition, this screening will feature a LIVE SCORE from Tenth Intervention!
In Czech director Jan Svankmajer’s surreal adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s book, Alice (Kristyna Kohoutova) follows her stuffed rabbit through a portal inside her desk to be whisked away to Wonderland. While the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat are still present, the familiar magical world and bizarre characters have undergone an unsettling transformation in the director’s vision through the stop-motion animation of dead animals, puppets and other assorted objects.
Tenth Intervention (Dorian Wallace, piano, Hajnal Pivnick, violin) presents contemporary music in New York City. Through collaborations with composers, musicians, visual artists, choreographers, and dancers, they produce programs that expand the reach of music to be diverse, pioneering, and socially conscious. American Cool: DIRTY HARRY
Thanks to a prolific turn from the mid-1960s, including a number of films with Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood was a star prior to Dirty Harry‘s release, but it was that role – the anti-hero cop pursuing justice even as it approached vigilantist and even fascistic ends – that has lingered as the quintessential Eastwood character. The film is undeniably magnetizing thanks to Eastwood’s dedicated (even sincere) portrayal of Harry Callahan, but no less troubling for the same reason. Where does the line between depiction and endorsement or identification end? Whether you see it as morally repellent or as a cautionary fable, its legacy stands tall, and its thrills remain effective.
Sneak Preview: MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL SINKING INTO THE SEA
#3 best undistributed film of 2016! – Indiewire Critics Survey
From acclaimed graphic novelist Dash Shaw comes an audacious debut that is equal parts disaster cinema, high school comedy and blockbuster satire, told through a dream-like mixed media animation style that incorporates drawings, paintings and collage. Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship, Dash learns of the administration’s cover-up that puts all the students in danger. As disaster erupts and the friends race to escape through the roof of the school, they are joined by a popular know-it-all (Lena Dunham) and a lunch lady (Susan Sarandon) who is much more than meets the eye.
